This book focuses on the identity of the dogaresse, wives of the elected leaders (doges) of late medieval Venice. The study traces the evolution of official and public functions of this group of wives, and the limitations placed upon them, during Venice's development into an international economic and political power. The book examines the the challenges of female proximity to, intersection and interaction with Venice's unique and male-dominated political system and considers the tensions between the state, family and gender that met in the person of the ducal consort. Further, this work places these political wives in a broader context through comparison with other political consorts. The project enhances historical understanding of women, family and the gendering of political environments in the most Serene Republic.
